We used to go out fairly frequently to a 'ville named An Trach
which was west of the Reg. area. We gave shots to about 250 kids
one day. Handed out lots of aspirin, band aids and such.
There were some really sick people on occasions. Had a young girl
one day that had been carried for some incredible distance on a
makeshift litter. She had a severe infection in here lower leg.
when I opened it to drain, a piece of bone popped out about 6"
long. Her tibia had been fractured. She never whimpered or
cried. Filled her full of Pen-G and told her family to bring her
to the BAS every day. Never saw her again. We had a Dentist
from 1st Med in Danang that would accompany us some times. He
would pull teeth without Novocain, barely a sound would come from the
patient. The pic attached of sick call was at the BAS at the Batt.
area (Phong Luc 2). The Corpsman with the hat on is Joe
Maribito, the older guy in back was Jack Snyder. He had to
be the oldest E-3(HN) in the navy. He finally made E-6 and retired
then continued to drink himself to death. The guy in the
foreground is me Dave DeVries. The second picture was
taken at the "Alamo" early Dec.'68, on HWY. 1 . Louie, the big
kid would mooch cigarettes and c-rats. Note the cigarette in his
little brothers mouth and c-rat in his hand. Looks like it may
have been pound cake. -photo

Tim Hupp also a corpsman with C 1/1 joined at the hip with Bill. I
think Bill and Tim were probably the last people to see Gunny Rush. I
believe they went out to the USS Repose to see him just before
they shipped him to Japan. - photo from Rick Teno
