1/1 Front Gates
What the Battalion Front Gate looked like depended on when you were there. We
are gradually building a pictorial history of the travels of 1/1 from 1965-1971.

Map of 1/1's AO end of '68 thru '70 before moving to Hill 10.
Thanks to Lee Hodge for marking the places and Ernie Brown and Joe Fulginiti for
helping pin down the coordinates.
The 7th Marines site has excellent maps at http://www.marzone.com,
including instructions on how to obtain maps from the U.S. Coast and Geodetic
Survey [USGS]. Thanks to Victor Vilionis, 7th Marines webmaster, for the
great work.

Camp Saxon was the location for Alpha
when we first got over there. It was named for PFC Frank Saxon, who I
believe was the battalion’s first (and youngest) KIA. I was on the
patrol where he was killed by a grenade fragment in the heart. Later
alpha moved to Hill 22.

Gateway to Dodge 1969 Technically,
not a front gate picture, but for me, this was home. This sign was just off the Bn LZ
.
In the background to the right is the S-1 hooch. The S-2 hooch on the other side
of the S-1 hooch. If you bear to the left from this sign, walk about 20 meters
across open area to the S-1.
