| | S-2 was the intelligence section. Scouts were attached to S-2.
According to Ron Davenport(Stix), prior to May/June '67, scouts were attached to
S-3. Scouts were like utility infielder's for the battalion. They would run
patrols from the battalion, accompany rifle companies to handle detainees, and any
other 'special projects' that came up.
MEMORIALS
S-2 duties:
"...consisted of the daily intelligence summary, or I-Sum, a kind of
daily diary of the battalion's activities prepared every morning from the reams
of field reports, agent reports, weather surveys and other material that had
accumulated during the previous twenty-four hours, the nightly plotting of
artillery targets for harassment and interdiction fire, the preparation of
intelligence estimates and terrain studies on an as-needed basis, the handling
of prisoners and captured material sent in from the field, and an assortment of
miscellaneous duties loosely classified under the heading of intelligence".
The above paragraph comes from the book, Vietnam-Perkasie, A Combat Marine
Memoir, written by W. D. Ehrhart. It's about his experiences while he was
with 1/1 from February, '67 to February, '68. It's a good read. Made me glad I
was there in '69, not '67. He read about the chocolate chip cookies from
this book at the 1999 Reunion in Detroit.
