S-3 was operations. They operated from the COC bunker, the most heavily fortified place in the Battalion rear. It was geographically near the center of both of the battalion rear in '69 at least. The maps were here and the 'big picture' of what the battalion was doing ran from here. S-1 guys not on guard duty went to establish perimeter around S-3 when we got hit. This always struck me as being kind of scary. In order for any bad guys to get to the COC, they had to get through the wire, over the berm, through a bunch of Marines and then show up in front of me. Fortunately, this never happened, although I did almost shoot an S-2 2Lt as he was running to the S-3 on 12 May 1969. Scared him, scared me. Interesting day that Mother's Day in '69. -Dan King |
